Jill Wahl talked about her job as an English teacher at Barker Road Middle School.
Who is a teacher or professor who inspired you and how?
“I have been blessed with many wonderful teachers in my life, but the most inspirational was my mentor when I began teaching in Pittsford, David Vitale. He was the most creative, generous, innovative, dedicated professional I had ever observed in the classroom. He maintained rigorous standards with a compassionate, nurturing demeanor. Even now, I regularly seek his advice regarding teaching and life in general. His thirty-three years of experience (teaching 7th grade in Pittsford) give him great perspective, and I admire his passion, kindness, and wisdom.”
What are the greatest challenges in education today?
“In today’s economic crisis, we have to be careful to protect the balanced, quality education that our children deserve. People can sometimes panic or look for scapegoats in tough times, and we really need to stay focused on our mission. It is important to remember what was successful in the past and to support efforts to be even more successful in the future. While trying to be fiscally responsible, we need to be sure to offer our kids the best, most well-rounded school experiences that we can.”
What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into education?
“I would tell them to keep focused on the students and their amazing potential. The best advice is to enjoy each day, and remember that every student is someone’s precious child.”
What teaching moment is the most memorable?
“Teaching is rewarding, and it is never boring! The greatest joys are in the small victories that happen in classrooms every day. Every time a reluctant reader gets excited about a novel, I am reminded of the power of language. There is nothing more gratifying than working with kids as they discover and develop their talents. Witnessing the pride in their accomplishments is priceless.”
