Mary Nolan is a ballet artist who has recently been commissioned to create and choreograph a new, innovative contemporary ballet on the subject matter of “anti”-bullying, a phrase she has coined with the help of one of her two daughters.
The rehearsals and performance will be centered in Irondequoit, where Nolan resides, but the opportunity to participate in the project, and ballet, is open to teens throughout the greater Rochester community.
Nolan has been awarded a 2012 Decentralization Individual Artist Project Grant, provided by the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester (www.artsrochester.org) through support received from the New York State Legislature and the New York State Council on the Arts.
The grant project title is the Community Youth Ballet Project (CYBP). Nolan is hoping to attract, and benefit, between 20 and 40 youths under the age of 18 in the community.
Teens will audition, be cast as characters in the ballet, and will attend ballet classes and choreography rehearsals. No ballet experience is necessary, and everyone who auditions will be part of the performance, Nolan said.
In addition, parents, family and friends will be recruited to help as volunteers with all aspects of the project.
Dancers will wear their own clothing to allow for freedom of movement.
