The Honeoye Falls-Lima football team doesn’t have as many players as normal. The offensive line doesn’t boast the size that has been a staple of the program.

For a program looking to make positive strides though Friday night was a good first step.

The Cougars fought off Spencerport 35-33 in overtime in the season opener at Spencerport. HF-L, coming off a 4-4 season and with plenty of new players, stopped the Rangers on a two-point conversion that would have sent the game into double overtime.

“We’re low on numbers, we’re low on big guys playing up front and I knew playing this style of offense, our guys were going to take a beating,” said Dan Hoyt, Cougars head coach. “Our guys play both ways and they were warriors and we came out on top.”

HF-L’s offense came out firing on all cylinders scoring on four of their five first half possessions to take a 27-20 lead into halftime. The Ranger defense responded in the second half keeping the Cougars out of the end zone in the half.

Trailing 27-20 Spencerport’s Trent Egenlauf scored on a one-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 10:09 left in the fourth quarter.

Dylan Swetman scored on a one-yard touchdown run and hit Alex Obenhofer on the two-point conversion to give HF-L a 35-27 lead in overtime. Ranger junior Jake O’Connell scored on a one-yard touchdown run but Spenceport’s two-point conversion failed to end the game.

“That came out just like we designed it,” Swetman said about the sneak. “The offensive line did a great job creating a space for met to get through.”

The game was delayed for an hour and a half thanks to lightning in the second quarter. The game was called with 1:53 remaining in the first half with the Cougars up 21-12.

Twice the teams thought they could return to the field before another lightning strike forced another 30 minute delay.

“It was tough for both teams,” Hoyt said. “Twice we almost came out, the kids got the pads on and they were ready to come back. This was something new that I have never experienced before.”

The two teams didn’t have any opening night jitters combining for 47 first half points.

HF-L’s Ryan Quackenbush scored on a one-yard touchdown run on the opening possession of the game. The Rangers responded on their opening drive as Erin Harris scored on a 13-yard run.

Tim Segrue’s three-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter gave the Cougars a 14-6 advantage. Quackenbush found the end zone next for HF-L scoring on a 54-yard touchdown run.

O’Connell scored on a one-yard touchdown run and 18-yard touchdown reception on back-to-back possessions to get the Rangers within one. Swetman connected with Obenhofer on a 14-yard touchdown pass with one second remaining in the first half.

“It felt really good to get a win, get that first one out of the way,” Quackenbush said. “First half I think we had a lot of adrenaline, but to their credit (Spencerport) made some adjustments in the second half. It felt great to score in the overtime and get some momentum.”
