Puffins — cute, chubby little birds with bright beaks— were gone from the coast of Maine when Steve Kress, the “Puffin Man,” started restoration efforts on Eastern Egg Rock nearly 40 years ago.
Kress is world famous for successfully re-establishing seabird colonies in the Gulf of Maine where he has worked for the past four decades. It took eight years before the first puffin chick was hatched at Eastern Egg Rock.
He will describe his exploits on that barren seven-acre island and how techniques developed there serve as a model for rebuilding colonies of seabirds around the world at the Rochester Birding Association’s October meeting in Henrietta.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
