Can anyone beat Pittsford?
That is the question on the minds of the top teams in Class A as the Section 5 boys swimming season began last month. Over the next two months, it will be answered before they all come together for sectionals in February.
One look at what the Panthers have coming back and another sectional title could be heading to the trophy case at Mendon.
Matt Tanchick leads the way. The versatile junior is the defending Section 5 champion in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
The Panthers have plenty of strong freestyle swimmers including Patrick Ransford and Morgan Marin. Pittsford boasts the top two divers in Class A in Sam Randall and Dylan Marin.
Fairport appears most likely to push Pittsford at sectionals.
The Red Raiders are led by talented junior Charlie Morales. Morales is defending Class A champion in the 100 backstroke and was part of the 200 medley and 400 free relays that placed third at the state meet last season.
Senior Evan Zheng teamed with Morales to win the 400 free relay at the Section 5 meet and was the runner-up in the 100 free. The Red Raiders also have talented relay swimmers in Sam Rice and David Howard.
Sophomore Tom Kirch will lead a young Rush-Henrietta team this winter. Kirch qualified for the state meet in the 200 IM and 100 breast last season.
If McQuaid is going to keep their multi-year unbeaten streak in dual meets alive, Kevin Tobey is going to play a key role in the team’s success. Tobey is the defending Class A champion in the 100 fly and competed in four events at the state meet last winter.
Victor will try to unseat Brighton atop Class B this winter. The Barons have won sectionals two of the last three seasons.
Blue Devil junior Jeffrey Williamson, the defending Class B champion in the 200 and 500 free, was Section 5’s top swimmer last season. Senior teammate Ben Chappell will try to build off a season that featured three sectional titles.
The Barons meanwhile will rely on senior captains James Premo, Robbie Marvald and Owen Karl. Brighton also returns the top diver in Class B in Scott Lazeroff
