The Pittsford Mendon Cross Country teams ended their Monroe County League dual meet seasons on a high note sweeping their competition with both boys and girls teams going 4-0.

The girls team was 4-0 in their Division going into the meet, but were up against a strong Honeoye Falls-Lima team that was also 4-0. The Vikings prevailed edging HF-L 26-29 while earning perfect scores of 15 against Spencerport, Greece Olympia and Greece Odyssey.

The Cougar girls were without their top runner, Hannah Cole, but still managed to finish 1-2 in the race with Riley Douglas and Martha Mevorach. Mendon’s Colleen Yancey was close behind finishing third overall running with a fast clocking of 19:05.

Maddy Pieper (fourth, 19:29), Lilly Pieper (fifth, 19:34) and Allie Novak (sixth, 19:55) all cracked the 20 minute barrier and put Mendon in a position to win the meet. Senior Brenna Swetman sealed the victory finishing in front of HFL’s fourth runner with an 8th place overall finish and a 20:24 personal best clocking.

Izzy Ballet also just missed the top-10 placing 11th with a 20:28 clocking.

The boys team was also up against a strong squad from HF-L and were shorthanded without their top runner, Jack Wesley who was nursing an injury. Despite this the Vikings still packed eight runners into the top 10 in order to cruise to victory.

Connor Green (16:23) and Matt VanVleck (16:25) were in the lead for much of the race and finished in second and third to JT Paganelli of HF-L. They were followed by two Cougar runners and a pack of Mendon runners that included Nathan Doyle (sixth, 16:42), Robert Young (seventh, 16:48), Kevin Dooley (eighth, 16:55), Evan Feigel (ninth, 16:56) and David Azzara (10th, 17:02).

“Both teams looked great today,” said Jason DeJoy, Mendon head coach. “We had many athletes running personal best performances including 13 boys cracking the 18 minute barrier and six under 17 minutes. Seneca Park is a fast course which gave the runners a chance to run fast and they took full advantage of it.”

The boys team finished their league meet season with an overall record of 21-2 while the girls finished at 20-3. The team is now preparing for the championship season which begins with the Monroe County Championships Saturday at Parma Park.
