This is uncharted territory for the Spencerport football team.
“Obviously it means a lot because there hasn’t been success recently and we are starting to build something,” said John Dowd, Rangers head coach, who’s team improved to 3-1 following Friday’s 42-28 victory at Brighton.
“We are laying the foundation here. We have to continue to work. It doesn’t mean anything if we end up 3-5. We have to continue to grow. We have set goals of making playoffs and doing something when we get there.”
The Rangers need one more win in the final three games to secure their first winning season since 2001. Spencerport aims for their fourth win on Sept. 29 when they host Greece Arcadia.
The Rangers grinded out their third win, scoring 21 straight points after the Barons tied the game early in the third quarter.
“There is a lot of hard work and dedication that the team has been putting in,” said Spencerport junior running back Trent Egenlauf, who finished with 292 yards rushing and three touchdowns. “We have been here grinding, day in and day out. The hard work is paying off.”
Egenlauf paced a dominating Ranger ground attack that finished with 409 yards on 68 carries. The running of Egenlauf, Jake O’Connell and Rob Williams sewed up the victory in the second half.
Egenlauf ran it in from two yards out to give Spencerport at 28-21 lead with 1:38 remaining in the third quarter. Egenlauf’s third touchdown came on the first play on the fourth quarter, when he found the end zone from 19 yards out.
Williams finished the Ranger scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run with 2:18 remaining in the fourth to cap a 5-minute and 54-second drive.
“All the hard work we have put in day in and day out, it feels good to see it pay off,” said O’Connell, who finished with two touchdowns. “A lot of people hate on Spencerport so it feels good to get a win.”
Trailing 21-6 early in the third quarter, the Barons used big plays on offense and special teams to quickly get back in the game.
Quarterback Ben Pearsall connected with tight end Jack Thomas for a 67-yard touchdown pass and Brighton made the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to seven. Brighton recovered an onside kick and two plays later Devan Carter scored on a 35-yard touchdown run.
Carter finished with three touchdowns to lead the Barons.
“When you play a team like Spencerport that has the ability to eat the clock and be very efficient, we knew our offense was going to have to take care of business,” said Stephen Lian, Brighton head coach. “In the first half we only scored six points, it is going to be tough.”
The Barons are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday at Irondequoit.
