Canandaigua was graced by the presence of a hip-hop legend, and a newly minted lion, Thursday night.

The artist, who was once known as Snoop Doggy Dog, then simply Snoop Dogg, recently switched his name again. This time the Los Angeles rap icon — whose real name is Calvin Broadus — chose the moniker Snoop Lion. But regardless of the name, the veteran rapper knew how to entertain the crowd at Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center during his Aug. 2 show.

Snoop didn’t hit the stage until 10 p.m., but he entered the stage in style. A crew of around 10 people entered the stage first and sampled several songs for the crowd, including Dr. Dre’s "Still D.R.E." and the headliner’s first single released under the Snoop Lion name, "La La La."

Once Snoop Dogg/Lion came out, he performed his own hits, such as "Gin and Juice" and "Who Am I (What’s My Name?)." He also rapped to other classic hip-hop songs such as Dr. Dre’s "Next Episode" and House of Pain’s "Jump Around."

While his new Snoop Lion persona is more of a reggae guy, his set list consisted of mostly rap songs. His set lasted about an hour.

Snoop’s onstage entourage included two scantily clad dancers and a man wearing a dog mascot head, who was waving props around to the crowd.

Yelawolf, a rapper from Alabama, was the opening act. Along with performing songs from his 2011 album Radioactive — such as "Animal," he also played his more popular tunes, like "Pop the Trunk." Yelawolf briefly covered songs by other rappers, including Eminem’s "The Way I Am."

To honor Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys — who died in May — Yelawolf performed a medley of Beastie Boys songs that consisted of "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)," "Brass Monkey" and "Intergalactic."
