A piece of property that was once home to a drycleaning business has been flagged as an environmental threat by the state.
The now vacant property, located at 1600 Penfield Road, is located just west of Panorama Trail in the town of Penfield.
It was once home to Carriage Cleaners, a dry cleaning business that operated at the location from 1961 to 2005. It is less than one acre in size and sits next to a daycare facility and dance studio.
After a series of tests, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and Department of Health (NYSDOH) announced last week that the site has been listed as an environmental danger.
They are now developing a plan to remediate the site, which they say has traces of solvent in the soils and shallow groundwater.
The property has been purchased by an applicant who received approval from the Penfield Planning Board to build a Classy Chassy Car Wash at the location — a project that has been on hold until the DEC completes its review.
While this cleanup process is underway, Town Supervisor Tony LaFountain said that residents have to suffer the eyesore until further notice. He said that many residents have already sent complaints about it via email.
“Fortunately we don’t have a lot of distressed properties in town, but the ones we have just stand out like a sore thumb.”
Members of the public are allowed to offer feedback on the DEC’s proposed remediation until Oct. 3.
