The businesses of the Village of Webster are kicking off their own lineup of free summer events this weekend with the village’s fifth Webster Jazz Festival.
On the heels of the popular Rochester International Jazz Festival, the fifth annual Webster Jazz Festival, which takes place on two stages on West Main Street in the village, begins at 4:15 p.m. and concerts run almost continuously from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, July 7.
The featured artist at this year’s festival is Lao Tizer and his Tizer Band, from Los Angeles.
Tizer is a keyboardist who is considered by many to be a torchbearer for the new generation of contemporary jazz. Both Tizer and his band were “Best New Jazz Artist” and “Jazz Group of the Year” nominees, respectively, in 2011.
Tizer has shared the stage with artists like Isaac Hayes, Boney James, Wayne Shorter, George Benson, The Commodores, Robin Thicke, The Rippingtons, Bruce Hornsby, Jethro Tull, and Spyro Gyra. His recordings may be heard on radio and television.
The Bill Tiberio Band will open the festival on the East Stage, near the corner of Route 250 (North Avenue) and Main Street, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Paradigm Shift will follow at about 6:50 p.m. on the West Stage, near Corning Park.
Tizer will play two sets on the East Stage beginning at around 8:30 p.m.
Concert-goers are encouraged to bring their own chairs and picnic fixings, but there will also be a number of food vendors with concessions to purchase. A variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
The villages Business Improvement District, or BID, is also continuing its popular concerts from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays in Memorial Gazebo Park on North Avenue.
The Friday night series will feature the Mark Cassara Band tonight, Friday, July 6; Rochester Brass and Electric July 20; the 18-piece Jack Allen Big Band July 27; Friend Unplugged, with Webster natives Frank and Jane Condeiro, Aug. 3; Moondance, playing jazz, country and classics, featuring Webster resident Sam DeFranco Aug. 10, and Eggman’s Traveling Carnival, featuring Webster residents Eggy Soler, Edd Altavelz and John Jones with Scott Kreyer on Aug. 17.
The BID also sponsors Tuesday Night Movies in the Park July 10 through Aug. 28, also at Memorial Gazebo Park. The series of free movies begins next Tuesday with “The Tale of Despereaux.” There’s also free popcorn courtesy of Hegedorn’s Market. Movies begin at dusk; music and activities at 8 p.m.
