The Penfield Board of Education has named Dr. Stephen L. Grimm as the new school district superintendent.

Before coming to Penfield, Grimm served as superintendent of the Lansing school district, located just north of Ithaca, since 2008.

Grimm, 47, was raised in Rush, and still has family in the Rochester area. He said he being named Penfield’s new leader of schools was an honor.

“Penfield’s vision and history of excellence in so many different areas elicits in me a level of professional excitement about future possibilities in the district, and personal satisfaction in knowing we will be raising our family in a wonderful caring community,” said Grimm in a statement.

In addition to his work in Lansing, Grimm has worked in several school districts in the Rochester region.

He has served as director of Greece secondary schools and principal of Wheatland-Chili Junior-Senior High School. He was also assistant principal in the Canandaigua district, and taught math and science in West Irondequoit and Geneseo.

Dr. Grimm earned his doctorate from the University of Rochester, an administrative certification from SUNY Brockport, his master’s degree from Nazareth College and a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Buffalo.

This fall, he will be moving to Penfield with wife Miquel and their three children, 6-year-old twin girls and 7-year-old son. Grimm said he was drawn to the district as a place to work and raise a family.

“I knew I needed to be in a district that is known for high academics, with a great focus on whole child development,” he said.

The Penfield school board started its search for a new superintendent following the retirement of John Carlevatti, who is leaving at the end of August after four years in the district.

Grimm was selected from a pool of 20 applicants through input from a selection committee comprised of faculty, staff, parents, administrators, and community members.

The school board announced their final decision on Thursday, Aug. 9. Board president Carole Nasra said they were “very pleased” to welcome Grimm to Penfield.

“He embodies the ideals of learning, trust and collaborative decision making that both the board and the community were looking for in the next superintendent,” Nasra stated.
