As of 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, almost 11,000 people were still without electricity in the Rochester area. While communities across the east coast may be dealing with flooding; in our area, it was the wind that left a calling card.
Yolanda Hahn lost power in her home Monday night around 9:30 p.m. While it isn't so pleasant, she remembers another storm that was much worse.
"It brings me back to the ice storm," says Hahn.
Hahn and her friend Sue Prem are trying to keep a positive attitude. During the storm, a huge tree came crashing down across Holt Road, taking power lines with it. Prem told us the tree has to be removed before crews can even begin to repair the lines.
"They told her that this wasn't really a priority, that there are people who are worse off," says Prem. "So until they get rid of the tree, then they can take care of the poles. They were out here, so all the lines are dead. That's a good thing."
RG&E spokesperson Dan Hucko is asking homeowners like Hahn to please be patient. He says every available crew is working, including some extras from Buffalo.
"We've done approximately 50 percent of our assessment of the system right now," says Hucko. "We found 29 broken poles and 500 wires down and the number could actually go up."
Hucko also says it could take at least a few days to restore power throughout the region.
"There is some extensive damage to our distribution system in the northern part of our territory here in Rochester up near the lake," says Hucko.
The Pellett family is taking the outage in stride. They live on the street behind Hahn's house. They luckily have a generator to depend on.
"At least we got the refrigerator going and a couple lights," says Keith Pellett.
