Irondequoit Police Sgt. Mark Bean, supervisor of the department's criminal investigations unit, said this afternoon that Rebecca Lopez, 31, died in the fire at 382 Falstaff Road, in the Laurelton area of Irondequoit, early Sunday morning.
Bean said Ms. Lopez resided in the home with her four children, but had not been staying there regularly recently because the power and water were shut off. He said the children were not home at the time of the fire and are have been living with their biological father.
All of Ms. Lopez's and her children's belongings were still in the house, Bean said.
Bean said investigators are still working on the case, but from a Monroe County Medical Examiner's report, Ms. Lopez appears to have died from smoke inhalation. She had no other injuries, he said.
"At this point, though, we're trying to be positive about what caused the fire, so we can determine what happened," Bean said.
Irondequoit fire companies responded to the blaze at 382 Falstaff Road just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning, July 15.
"There was extensive damage to the house," said Irondequoit Fire Marshal Gregory Merrick.
Merrick added this morning (Monday, July 16), that he may be seeking a demolition permit for the house as soon as tomorrow.
"The house is significantly damaged," Merrick said. "It was gutted."
He added that he still has "no idea" what caused the fire.
"We're still trying to understand what happened," Merrick said.
The home is a rental and owned by someone in Florida, he added.
Bean said firefighters originally thought the house was vacant, but they found the woman’s body inside.
Irondequoit's Laurelton, Ridge-Culver, Point Pleasant and Sea Breeze companies responded to the blaze, as did the West Webster Fire Department.
