After four years as Penfield school superintendent and more than 30 years working in education, John Carlevatti has announced that he will retire by Aug. 31.

Members of the Board of Education "regretfully" approved his resignation at their meeting on Tuesday, April 3, as board president Carole Nasra tearfully thanked him for his years of service.

In a statement, Nasra said that Carlevatti has been a strong leader who helped enhance school academics, facilities, and has helped prepare the district for the future.

“He has been a very visible figure in Penfield, building strong relationships with our students, staff and community and will be sorely missed. While we are sorry to see him go, we wish him all the best in the future," said Nasra.

The Board plans to discuss the steps it will take in searching for a new Superintendent at an upcoming meeting.

Staff were notified of the news on Tuesday.

"I appreciate the opportunity I've had to serve this district and community," he said.
