Residents at the Candlewood Apartments on County Road 28 were safely evacuated after a small apartment fire this morning, said State Police.

The fire started around 7:40 a.m. in building 3 of the apartment complex north of Route 332. Troopers said there was five people living in the apartment — three kids and two adults — that managed to escape without serious injury. The fire is believed to have started in the bedroom. However, the cause is still under investigation.

All residents in the building were evacuated.

“It was just black,” said neighbor Kayla Powers, of the smoke. “There was smoke in the stairwell, smoke everywhere.”

The fire was knocked down in under 10 minutes, said Sam Loicaono, of the Canandaigua Fire Department. He credited the fact that a firefighter was present in Station 2 in the town as a large reason for the quick response.

Aside from the Canandaigua Fire Department and state troopers, the VA Fire Department were also at the scene.
