At its meeting tonight, Tuesday, Aug. 21, the Irondequoit Town Board voted 3 to 1, along party lines, to fill a vacancy on the board.
Businessman and community volunteer Peter Kelderhouse, a Republican, was appointed to fill a vacancy that currently exists on the Irondequoit Town Board due to the resignation of
Stephanie Aldersley ,whose term would expire on Dec. 31, 2015. Aldersley, a Democrat, accepted an appointment to fill a vacancy on the County Legislature this summer, after Democrat Vincent Esposito announced his resignation to accept a state job.
"We had to look at a person for whom public service is his middle name," Supervisor Mary Joyce D'Aurizio said in making the recommendation to appoint Kelderhouse. "We need (public) officials to be positive, optimistic and firm."
John Perticone, who now will be the lone Democrat on the Town Board, said he has the utmost respect for Kelderhouse, but could not support the appointment.
According to town law,the Town Board may appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy for the balance of the 2012 year, and a special election will be held on Election Day, which is Nov. 6 this year.
While the appointment takes effect immediately, Kelderhouse won't be seated until he is officially sworn into office. No arrangements have yet been made for his swearing-in.
Kelderhouse, an Irondequoit resident for well over 30 years, is senior vice president and divisional manager for Sherman Furniture Rentals, and is a past president of both the Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce and the Irondequoit Public Library's board of trustees. He is also an active member of Irondequoit's St. Cecilia's Church, member and past president of Rochester Rotary, an honorary member of Irondequoit Rotary, past president of the Rochester Rotary Charitable Foundation, to name just a few of his many and varied community involvements. He and his wife, Anne, have two children and six grandchildren.
