Traffic on Winton Road at Interstate 590 in Brighton will be switched to the new Diverging Diamond Interchange traffic pattern on Saturday, Sept. 8.
New York State Department of Transportation officials said that to accomplish this work, Winton Road and the expressway ramps to and from I-590 will be closed to all traffic from 6 a.m. on Saturday through sometime that evening. Detours will be posted.
Winton Road will be closed between the north side of French Road and the south side of the Cambridge Place. The entrance and exit ramps to and from the I-590 expressway (Exit 1) will also be closed. In the event of rain, the closure will be postponed until favorable weather on a weeknight the following week, beginning with Monday night, Sept. 10, from 8 p.m. through 6 a.m.
During the closure, crews will be activating the new traffic signals, placing temporary signs and painting interim pavement markings that will delineate the new cross-over traffic pattern. Cones and barrels will mark the future islands and center barrier.
When the roads reopen, the new Diverging Diamond traffic pattern will be in place. The pattern is a roadway design that requires traffic on the intersecting non-freeway road to briefly drive on the opposite side of the road by crossing at signalized intersections, allowing a free flow of traffic onto the interstate.
The construction schedule calls for road work to continue until October. Subsequent weekend closures are currently scheduled for the following dates, assuming favorable weather conditions and general construction progress:
•Friday evening, Sept. 14, through Sunday, Sept. 16
•Friday evening, Sept. 21, through Sunday, Sept. 23
