The actions of University of Rochester students, a professor and Rochester Police officers were honored Tuesday after they worked to save the lives of two young special-needs children, whose stroller had fallen into the Erie Canal and became submerged underwater.
Their actions helped the children from drowning after the incident in August.
The little girl, Selah Clanton, is now breathing on her own and showing signs of improvement at the hospital. Her brother, Sam, who was also in the stroller, is doing fine.
The two children has been on a walk with their dad, Jon Clanton.
University of Rochester students Lindsay Wahl, Sarah Nevarez and Bridget Hughes, University of Rochester Professor David Lambert, along with Rochester Police officers Paul Dondorfer and Adam Alliet responded immediately to save the lives of the two children.
Monroe County Legislature Democratic Leader Ted O'Brien honored them Tuesday night.
“Thanks to quick action by our six heroes, an unspeakable tragedy was averted,” said O’Brien in a release. “I’m proud of the way our community members quickly rallied to rescue Sam and Selah from the water. It’s a great privilege to honor these role models for their courage and leadership.”
The six heroes visited the Monroe County Legislature on Tuesday, where O’Brien and other legislators presented them the resolution honoring their actions. They received a standing ovation from legislators, staff and community members as their names were announced.
“Lindsey, Sarah and Bridget showed remarkable ability; and I know that Sam and Selah won’t be the last lives they save as medical professionals," said O'Brien. "Officers Dondorfer and Alliet acted as true professionals and have made their city proud.”
