Though he is still a junior at Penfield High School, Connor Russell has given a verbal commitment to attend Syracuse University, for the Fall of 2013, where he plans to play lacrosse.

A three-sport athlete at Penfield, Russell feels lacrosse offers him the best chance to accomplish what he wants in college.

“I decided Syracuse because I want to study pre-law, and they have a very good pre-law program,” Russell said. “And they are the best team in the country and I want a chance to play for a national championship and get the best education possible.”

Also being close to home will allow his family the opportunity to go and watch him play.

Russell is a faceoff specialist for the Patriots, which is where he expects to play for the Orange.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder also plays football and ice hockey, but it was his lacrosse prowess which has drawn the most attention from colleges.

“It was the best opportunity for me to go to the best college possible, and I don’t have to be that big for the position I play in lacrosse,” Russell added with a smile.

“All three of them really go together,” said Russell of the three sports. “Hockey and lacrosse both have sticks, so I can work on my hands in both sports. Football and lacrosse both consist of running, so I can stay in condition. And all three of them are contact sports.”

The current faceoff specialist at SU is a sophomore.

“He will be a senior when I am a freshman,” Russell said.

When asked if he would like to play professional lacrosse, like local players Grant Catalino from Webster and Irondequoit’s Joe Walters, Russell said, “I wouldn’t mind it but I would like to do something like a sports agent or coach football.”

Russell returned to the gridiron against Brighton on Sept. 23, following an injury, and scored three touchdowns in leading the Patriots to a 42-27 win over the Barons. The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Patriots, dating back to last season.

“Our last win was my freshman year,” Russell said. “It was a great feeling for the team and the program.”
