The East team put together a 92-yard drive to set up a game-winning field goal with 2.1 seconds left to win the 30th annual Eddie Meath All-Star game 21-20 Saturday at St. John Fisher College.
Wayne Central’s Cory McNamara drilled the 22-yard field goal to give his team the lead.
“I tried to not think about it,” he said. “I put the pressure away, especially since at the beginning of the game I had the mishap on the extra point. I zoned in, zoned everybody else out and I just put it up.”
The defensive back also made five tackles to earn defensive most valuable player honors for the East. Pittsford’s Dominick DeLucia earned offensive MVP honors for the East carrying the ball 18 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.
“It’s a great way to close out my high school football career,” DeLucia said. “There’s nothing better than a one-point game and a comeback victory in the last two seconds.”
Letchworth’s Ryan Owens caught five passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns and was named the West’s offensive MVP. Caledonia-Mumford defensive back Matt Hartford was the West’s defensive MVP.
The East team opened the scoring when Wayne quarterback Connor Hollenbeck kept the ball for a one-yard touchdown run on fourth down. McNamara’s extra point missed.
Hornell quarterback Dominic Scavo responded for the West, hitting Brockport’s Markell Collins for a 21-yard touchdown over the middle on the first play of the second quarter. Owens kicked the extra point.
Eastridge quarterback Ethan Printy put the East back on top when he found Webster Thomas’ Justin DiBernardo for a five-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed.
Scavo found Owens for a five-yard touchdown with 2:25 left in the half. The extra point missed, but the West led 13-12 at the break.
Greece Arcadia’s Marcus Smith recovered a fumble for the West in the third quarter to setup Wayland-Cohocton quarterback Evan Englert’s 36-yard touchdown strike to Owens. The extra point was good.
Early in the fourth quarter, the East started to rally as DeLucia capped off a long drive with a five-yard touchdown run up the middle. The two-point conversion to tie the game failed.
The East defense came up with two consecutive stops to get the ball back for one final drive. Penalties forced the East into a third and 20 situation from its own ten, but Hollenbeck found Michael Collichio for a 21-yard reception to get the first down. A mix of Hollenbeck passes and runs by Rush-Henrietta’s Christian Harris and DeLucia helped get the ball down the field for McNamara’s kick.
“It’s an all-star game, but we’re all competitors out here and we wanted to win,” DeLucia said. “I think we had a great week of practice and we all bonded. It was just the team chemistry that gave us that drive to win.”
The West tried to use a series of laterals to score on the ensuing kick return, but the kick was well covered.
