High School Round-up: Season begins today for many area teams

Boys Soccer

East Rochester 6
Honeoye 0

The East Rochester Bombers traveled to Honeoye to face the host Bulldogs in the Ryan Helfer Memorial Tournament and came away with a 6-0 win. Tarik Osmancevic got the scoring started for the ER at 17:00 on an assist from Kirk Hewitt, and Trevor Herb and Jordan Michele added a goal apiece to give the Bombers 3-0 halftime lead. Hewitt, David Altman and Jake Zito each added another goal within four minutes of each other mid way through the second half to secure the win for ER. Honeoye’s Stephen Steeley had five saves.

Livonia hosted Marcus Whitman on Thursday in a non-league boys soccer match and came out on top with a 2-0 win. Conrad Norman scored at 28:00 from 10 yards out on a pass from Nick Jonasse to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge, and the score remained the same until halftime. The beginning of the second half played to a draw until Chuckie D’Imperio scored on a direct kick from 25 yards to give Livonia a 2-0 advantage. Livonia’s Cameron Seeley and Tom Benedict combined for 10 saves in the shutout win, while Danny Clark turned away eight shots for Midlakes. The Screaming Eagles travel to Pal-Mac on Tuesday to face the Red Raiders.

Bloomfield 6
Sodus 0

The Bloomfield Bombers traveled to Sodus and defeated the Spartans 6-0. Junior Patrick Erdle headed the first at 10:12, junior
Zach DeBoard scored the second goal at 15:20, and junior Jarrett Riker closed the first half scoring with a goal at 19:20. Riker got another goal to open the second half at 40:58. DeBoard scored again at 60:46, and senior Tony Derby scored the Bombers’ last goal at 67:33. Seniors Zach Hammond and Jake Weber, and juniors Connor Jugle and Constantyn Wirlo had assists for Bloomfield. Bloomfield junior goalkeeper Ethan Hudson made seven saves. The Bombers (2-0) travel to Honeoye Tuesday night.


Girls Soccer

Waterloo 1,
Geneva 0

Waterloo hosted Geneva on Thursday and came away with a 1-0 victory in the opening game of the season for both teams. After the two teams played to a tie for the first 40 minutes, Waterloo’s Taryn Simmons was awarded a penalty kick 15 minutes into the second half of play. Simmons, a junior who was forced to miss all of last season due to a broken ankle, converted the penalty kick and provided the Indians with just enough offense to hold of the visiting Panthers. Mackenzie Schessl had eight saves for Waterloo, who host Midlakes September 14 in their next game. Geneva’s next game is home against Romulus September 8.

Bloomfield 4,
Geneva 1

Bloomfield traveled to Geneva on Thursday and earned a 4-1 victory in a non-league tennis match. Kate Ellis defeated Taylor Perry 6-1, 6-2 in first singles for the Bombers, while her teammate Nikki Williams held off Kelsey VanKirk 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) to win second singles. Geneva’s Amanda Miller earned a victory in third singles 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 over Brianna Carlson. Bloomfield was victorious in both doubles matches, as Christina Grace and Lydia Schaeffer teamed up to defeat Mei-Wah Choi and Lindsey Mattick 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in first doubles, and Rosie Steele and Kaylan Portef earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in second doubles over Meredith DiDuro and Teaganne Finn.

Midlakes 4,
Wayne 1

Midlakes hosted Wayne and came out with a 4-1 win in the opening match of the season for both teams. Hannah Gage of Midlakes beat Rachael Northrup 7-5, 7(7)-6(0) in first singles, and Wayne’s Danielle Stewart earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory in second singles over Megan Sancett. Kelli Leitner  earned Midlakes another win in third singles over Maddison Schlosser 6-2, 2-6, 7(7)-6(4), while teammates Leah Pollot and Katie VanHooft defeated Jessica Tallinger and Mackenzie Zerniak 6-3, 6-3 in first doubles. Midlakes next match is scheduled for September 8, when they travel to Bloomfield.

HAC 5,
Naples 0

HAC earned a win in Naples on Thursday, defeating the Big Green 5-0. Caitlin Richard got a win in first singles over Victoria Rector 6-0, 6-0, while teammate Kristina Benjamin defeated Kalsey Gorcica 6-3, 6-0 in second singles. Amanda Johnson finished up the singles competition with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kiki VandeSande 6-0, 6-1. Lydia Hill and Khushi Chhangoni teamed up for the Wolves in first doubles to defeat Shay Iverson and Danielle DelGatto 6-2, 6-2, while Hannah DeSelns and Meghan Frost closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over  Jayme DelGatto and Jennie Betts.

Girls Volleyball

Waterloo 3,
Mynderse 0

The Waterloo girls volleyball team opened their season on Thursday by hosting Mynderse in a non-league match and came away with a win in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-15, 26-24. Lera Braun of Waterloo served for 14 points, tallied four aces and six digs, and combined with Maddie Coriale for 21 assists. Lindsay Johnson added 10 kills, one block and six digs for the Indians, and Alicia Knapton contributed to the victory with five kills and five digs. For Mynderse, Chelsea Snyder notched 14 kills and one block, and Megan Tuttle added four aces and three digs. Mynderse next match is September 8 at home against Dundee, while Waterloo travels to South Seneca Friday for the pre-season Volleyfest Tournament.
