The Canandaigua Braves girls lacrosse team got off the bus ready and raring to go, taking it to the host Blue Devils right off the bat on the Corbit Field turf Thursday afternoon. The Braves came away with an important early-season road win 14-10.

Canandaigua led 8-3 with about seven minutes left in the first half and led 9-5 at the end of the half. Both teams scored five goals apiece in the second half.

Leading the Braves, scoring seven goals, was junior Jordan Johnson, who now has scored 13 goals in her last two games. With 13 juniors on the team, it was nothing but juniors that scored for the now 7-1 Braves. Lauren D’Amore netted three goals, Dakotah Savitcheff scored two and both Macy Marafioti and Heather Groot had one each.

While scoring the goals was obviously a major part of the Braves' win, when talking with the Braves goal-scorers, they thought it was the play of their goalies, Amanda Yavorek in the first half and Devan Olschewske in the second half, combined with solid defense that played the bigger part.

“I am so proud of us. It was a huge win,” said Lauren D’Amore immediately after the game. “Amanda and Devan both did amazing in goal and our offense finished, which was so big.”

Johnson brought the defense, specifically Alexandra Fox, into the winning equation.

“Our defense did amazing,” Johnson pointed out. “Honestly, if there is somebody you should be talking to it’s Aly Fox. She completely ruled our defense. Seriously.”

With seven goals, it would be impossible not to have asked Johnson how she got it done.

“Half of my goals were off of really nice feeds,” she quickly replied. “We move the ball really well as an offense, as a whole. I mean, we have been playing together since we were in the second grade so we know how to work together,"

With six minutes left in the game, Victor trailed 11-9 before Johnson netted back-to-back-to-back goals in a two and one-half minute span. The Blue Devils were led by three goals each from Megan Maloney and Hannah Savage, two goals from Jessi Thon and one each from Shannon Hackel and Sarah Kopp. As they have done lately, Jenny Ryan was in the nets for the Blue Devils in the first half and was replaced by Liz Nussbaum in the second half.

“I don’t know if we left our game down in Georgia last week,” lamented Victor coach Mike Myers of his team's spring break trip the previous week. “We played Milton, which is like 13th in the nation, and beat them. But today ... we just have to make passes. That and not clump up around the twelve. That was the key today.”

Make no mistake, this win over the Blue Devils will go a long way for the Braves, who play at home against Brighton next Wednesday while Victor’s next game will be hosting Brighton next Monday.

“This has pumped us up so much,” Savitcheff exclaimed, smiling ear to ear amongst her equally as happy teammates. “This is so exciting for us, because this is probably one of our biggest games.”

Getting the last word, agreeing with her teammate, was Johnson.

“This was a big win for us and we look forward to the next one,” she concluded.
