Pittsford Mendon High School varsity cross country competed at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships at Chenango Valley State Park against the state’s top Class B runners Nov. 12.
Eleven teams participated in the 5K races, in addition to five individual competitors who advanced from their sectional meet the previous week.
Senior Elyse Barkstrom represented Mendon as an individual and member of the Section V girls team. Barkstom finished 62nd in the girls race and earned All-State honorable mention.
The Mendon boys team earned second place for Class B, scoring 91 points, compared to first-place Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s 53 points. This marked the fifth consecutive year where Mendon finished in the top three in the state. Out of 127 runners, junior Nathan Lawler led Mendon with his first place overall finish in 15 minutes, 30.3 seconds. After Lawler were senior Sam Trawick in 41st, freshman Sam Lawler in 49th, senior Connor Fitzgerald in 61st, senior Josh McCarthy in 71st, freshman Jimmy Smith in 78th and senior Casey Woodward in 89th. Nathan Lawler was named the New York State Junior Runner of the Year and named to the All-State First Team.
“This was a tremendous season for our program where we performed above many people’s expectations. It is a testament to the dedication and belief of each member of this team,” said Chris Compson, head coach.
