Tyler Clementi was a freshman at Rutgers University who committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge.
His roommate, Dharun Ravi, is absolutely responsible for Clementi’s death. He should be prosecuted not only for invasion of privacy, but also for a hate crime.
Ravi is against homosexuality and looks down upon gay people. Nine days before moving into Rutgers, he tweeted, “Found out my roommate is gay.” Only a person who has hatred against gay men would make the effort to post a message of that sort on the internet for his friends and everyone else to see.
Clearly, he was making a huge spectacle about it and wanted reactions from his friends. If his roommate’s sexuality was not an issue, there would have been no desire or thought to post it on the Internet.
That was not even the only time Ravi posted messages online about his roommate’s sexuality. He meant to embarrass and expose Clementi’s personal life because of his bigoted judgment toward homosexuality.
An accepting person would not post such things on the internet for everyone to see. Ravi told Clementi it was fine if he used their room; however, Ravi set up a camera to tape their encounter — not once, but twice. That was two times Ravi had the cruel intent to expose and embarrass his roommate.
Yes, it is true that Ravi didn’t literally push Clementi off the bridge, but metaphorically, he did. Would Clementi have jumped if those videos were never leaked online? No, he wouldn’t have.
Ravi recorded and posted the videos, so it is his fault. He was intent on embarrassing his roommate and he was intent on exposing his sexuality.
The world needs to be more accepting of everyone’s differences and people need to realize the consequences of homophobia. A harsher sentence for Ravi will bring to light the seriousness of what happened.
Dharun Ravi is responsible for Tyler Clementi’s death and does indeed deserve more than five years in jail.
