LETTER: Why publish Curt Smith's myopic diatribes?

I admit it; I look forward to the Irondequoit Post ending up in my mailbox and fast-forward to the editorial page to read the letters and opinions of my neighbors. Often these are very funny, as we have a variety of well-spoken submitters responding to crazies seemingly intent to scream their biases. All good fun, ah the local newspaper.

Expecting more from a commentator, especially one with the credentials of Curt Smith, I’m disappointed by Mr. Smith’s ongoing FOX news-like diatribes and distortions. His words, much like the smirk on his face adorned to the top of his piece, paint Joe Paterno (Mr. Smith's Joe Pa, unfortunately dead) unable to defend himself from the immoral (inference to Bill Clinton, and mind reading telepathic Al Gore) former director of the FBI, Louis Freeh, whom he declares as out to smear Penn State and the Catholic Church (July 26 issue). He asks “Where's the Proof.” I wonder why his politics so allow him to miss the point? Apparently the actions of Penn State and the NCAA don’t hold up to the opinions of the Paterno family and Mr. Smith, who, if only Joe Pa could speak, may be able to recognize evil.

I sincerely hope you don’t pay Mr. Smith for his “contribution,” because it seems to me he should be paying you for providing him an outlet for his myopic viewpoints.

It’s time for Mr. Smith to hang it up and go fishing.
