School budget and election results

Brighton

Brighton Central School District voters approved a $62.3 million budget by a margin of 665 votes: 1,105 to 440.

The $43,712,170 tax levy will increase $603,825 from the current year. The tax rate will be $24.26 per $1,000 of assessed value.

The district is eliminating 5.7 full-time equivalent positions due to enrollment, eliminating 4.5 other positions and consolidating 17.1 positions.  No programs will be reduced, but $150,000 would be budgeted for new initiatives such as a Mandarin language course, energy course and a district family support center. Cuts include materials and supplies, and having fewer chaperones for interscholastic sports.

Three candidates ran for two open board seats. Incumbent Morton Stein was re-elected to the board with 986 votes. Andrea Costanza, with 852 votes, edged Linda Eckel Mendelson, who received 847 votes.

A proposition to authorize the withdrawal of $1,428,000 for capital projects including a roof replacement at Brookside, lighting upgrade and parking lot lighting replacement at Council Rock Primary School, and a district-wide building condition survey passed  with 1,192 votes in favor and 336 votes against.

Residents also voted 1,180 to 343 to approve a proposition to authorize the transfer of $400,000 from the capital reserve fund to the district’s general operating fund and expend the sum for computer-related equipment and

Pittsford Central School District voters approved  a $109.7 million budget by a margin of 500 votes: 1,543 to 1,043.

The $83,177,728 tax levy will increase $2,116,373 from the current year. The tax rate will be $23.37 per $1,000 of assessed value.

Job cuts:
No reductions, but the number of positions at the middle and high schools would be frozen.

Affected programs: The district would no longer offer summer school for students who want to take new classes and is proposing a 5 percent reduction in discretionary areas such as supplies, materials, field trips and contractual expenses.

Propositions: Authorize the use of $1,125,000 from the bus purchase capital reserve fund to replace 11 buses. The proposition would not affect the 2010-11 tax levy.
