Getting back to basics seems to be working for the Pittsford Mendon varsity boys soccer team.
Having a solid goalie and a strong defense that works as a unit, good communication with the offense, an offense that has speed, can convert possession into goals, and a lot of hard work by all is a winning combination for Mendon.
The Vikings come off another three game week with three more wins. It began with a much-anticipated rematch between Brighton and Mendon, this time on the Barons turf.
The first half saw both teams working hard and scoreless with some great saves on defense. A scramble in front of the Mendon goal and it was midfielder Michael Gorczyca that got the save by heading the ball out.
In the second half the Vikings found their fire and Cam Perna got his seventh goal of the season as he put the ball passed the Baron goalie on a cross from Matt Renzi. Matt D’Amico got the second goal off of Ryan Aspenleiter for a final score of 2-0.
Honeoye Falls-Lima came to Pittsford mid-week and left with a loss. Mendon came out strong and got two goals in the first half. Dane VanBenthuysen scored first off the assist by Tanner Jameson.
Aspenleiter got the second goal from Stephen Betteridge. D’Amico got the final goal of the game off another assist from Betteridge in the second half in the 3-0 victory.
The other big game of the week for Mendon was against cross-town rivals Pittsford Sutherland. The crowds were big having just watched the Girls Varsity soccer teams tie in double overtime.
Both Pittsford goalies and defense were tested, but the Vikings got the first score from D’Amico, getting his 17th goal of the season, on a thru ball from Aspenleiter.
Second half and Mendon continued the scoring as Perna took a ball from Jameson for 2-0 lead. With two minutes left in the game, Betteridge took the ball through the Knights defense and sent his 10th assist this year to Aspenleiter who put it in the net.
Mendon goalie Aaron Fowlkes got his fourth shutout in a row with a score of 3-0.
The basics and teamwork have taken Mendon to 14-0 with two more games before the sectional run begins.
