The Pittsford Sutherland Cross Country harriers participated in their second Monroe County League meet of the season on Sept. 19 against squads from Brighton, Churchville-Chili, Honeoye Falls-Lima and Rush-Henrietta.
The boys earned a split on the day with two wins against two losses to take their record to 3-5 overall, while the girls gained three victories versus one loss to bring their record to 5-3 for the season.
“Our boys have run into some of the best teams in the county early on and taken their lumps, yet they have actually raced well,” said Jim Erwin, Knights head coach. “I believe they have the ability to notch several more victories than losses by the time our league season ends.”
The boys were led by the exceptional top five finishes of fellow seniors Will Phelan (third, 16:29) and Zach Cove (fourth, 16:46), who both looked strong while forging under the 17-minute mark on Mendon Ponds hilly three-mile West course.
Marco Huot (11th, 17:04), Patrick Regan (22nd, 17:46) and Eric Balta (25th, 17:59) completed Sutherland’s top five scoring positions. Named as Runners of the meet for their own excellent efforts were Ryan Alaimo (19:58), Matt Cupo (18:47), Chris Locke (18:52) and Triston Peiris (32:23).
In the girls’ race, Mary Visca ran to a sizzling time of 19:05 to place third to lead the Lady Knights. Visca’s time is one of the fastest ever recorded by a Sutherland girl on the Mendon Ponds West layout which has existed since the mid 1970’s.
Kate van der Sloot (seventh, 20:39), Casey Mulroy (14th, 21:16), Audrey Jacobson (19th, 21:39) and Raisa Masood (20th, 21:45) rounded out the scoring top five for Sutherland. Visca and van der Sloot were both chosen as Runners of the Meet for their fine races.
The Knights traveled west toward Batavia on Saturday to compete in the Genesee Community College “Cougar” Invite, site of the Section 5 Championship Meet to be held later in the season. Sutherland ran in the “large” school division races on a cool, cloudy day that provided excellent conditions for the runners.
The girls’ sub-varsity team ran first and senior first year member Katie Slebodnik led the way with a smart paced race to come in 12th in a very good time of 22:34. Also running for the Knights were Shannon Burke (57th, 24:16), Sophie Edwards (58th, 24:18), Casey Miller (79th, 25:37), Kate Hancey (84th, 25:45), Vivien Sun (101st, 26:58) and Danielle Naassana (118th, 28:15).
The boys’ sub-varsity squad were led by juniors Bobby Gaffney (19th, 18:42) and Noah Young (21st, 18:56). Drew Wray (27th, 19:02), John Bisognano (33rd, 19:10), Will Corbett (37th, 19:14), John Hutchinson (38th, 19:20), Chris Locke (47th, 19:28), Jacob Marsh (57th, 19:35) and Joey Guarino (75th, 19:58) all ran good races to give the Knights an impressive nine finishers under the 20-minute mark in the race.
