The Monroe County Little League Majors Tournament concluded on July 30 at Empire Park in Webster.

The game featured Penfield National versus Pittsford. Pittsford came into the game as the number one seed with an 8-1 record to Penfield’s 6-2 finish. Penfield had beaten Pittsford previously in their only loss of the tournament 10-8.

Pittsford won 15-5 in five innings, ending the game early from their 10-run lead. The game began with Penfield collecting four hits in the first inning including a triple driving in a run.

The next batter hit a long single to right field that Max Gonzalez threw to Jacob Vanderzwaag who made a terrific relay to Hannah Catallo-Stooks at catcher who made an excellent tag to get the advancing runner out at the plate.

Pittsford then came back in the bottom of the first inning with consecutive singles by Matt Kells, Jimmy Kells, Jack Fiorille, Catallo-Stooks, Vanderzwaag, and Connor Pulli, scoring five runs. Penfield answered against pitcher Matt Kells scoring two runs on three hits to make the score Pittsford 5-3.

Pittsford changed pitchers in the top of the third inning going with Cattallo-Stooks. Penfield then tied the score 5-5 on a two run home run by Calaso.

Penfield’s pitcher, Parmalee, then held Pittsford without a hit through the second and third innings including a tremendous play by their centerfielder’s running, diving catch on Jimmy Kells’ scorching line drive to center with two outs.

Richard Benjamin started things going in the bottom of the fourth with a single through the infield. Jack Bergin followed his lead with a single past the Penfield shortstop.

Matt Kells then hit a line drive over the centerfielder’s head that ended up bouncing out of the Park for a ground rule double driving a run.

Jimmy Kells next smashed a double to the fence in left-centerfield that drove in two runs brining the score to 8-5. Fiorille then singled through the infield to score Jimmy Kells. The fourth ended Pittsford ahead 9-5.

Catallo-Stooks held Penfield scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings allowing only one base runner over the two inning span. Vanderzwaag ignited the Pittsford attack in the bottom of the fifth with a single through the infield.

With two outs Richard Benjamin doubled a line drive down the left field line that scored a run. Bergin followed with a double scoring a run making the score 11-5.

Matt Kells singled to right driving in a run. Penfield’s defense drew in with the hopes of ending the inning. This did not stop Jimmy Kells who drove a fastball that was too much for the second baseman for a base hit driving in another run.

With a 10-run lead the game was ended in compliance with Little League rules. The Kells brothers both went 3-for-4 at the plate each hitting a double and scoring three runs apiece. Vanderzwaag and Fiorille were 2-for-3, while Bergin and Catallo-Stooks hit 2-for-4.

Pittsford reached the final by beating the host Webster team 7-1 On July 28 in a game that featured the excellent pitching of Matt Kells, Hannah Catallo-Stooks, and Jack Bergin. Gonzalez was 2-for-2 with a double while Fiorille and Benjamin were 2-for-3.
