One of the community service efforts the Pittsford Sutherland boys soccer team and the Friends of Sutherland Soccer(FOSS) have put major focus on this year is support of the Ronald McDonald House. This is a personal favorite cause for Sutherland Coach Stephen Schreib.
Both Pittsford High Schools combined to have a fundraiser on Oct. 6. All four varsity and junior varsity boys and girls teams played each other in an incredible event raising event netting $2,700.00 for the Ronald McDonald house.
This week brought Sutherland two home games in beautiful weather. The Knights faced the Aquinas Little Irish last Tuesday at home.
The game started off quickly. Within the first minute, both Knights Brian Kroetz and the Lil’ Irish’s Nick Shed took shots at the opponents goal.
A handball called on Aquinas defender Konrad Zydowicz set the stage for a goal by Sutherland. The Knights Brad Jennette takes the direct kick from 30 yards back dead center, very high and starts to drop within five yards of goal. Sutherland’s Davis Frame and Rolf Witt could be seen high above the pack and Witt gets his head on it for the score at 21:28.
The first half ended with the Knights ahead 1-0.
Nine minutes into the second half, Aquinas forward Paulin Kolodja drove hard to goal. Sutherland goalkeeper Lee Drinkwater came out of goal and with a great save as the two collide as Kolodja was in the act of shooting.
Aquinas ends their drought at 21:36 in the second half as Midfielder Hugo Landberg carries to the left corner and crosses to Jeremy Wilkin. Wilkin scored to the top right of goal to tie game.
Two minutes later Zydowicz took a direct kick from 35 yards out and Kolodja gets a yellow card for taking Sutherland attacker Austin Ramsager out in the goal mouth.
Seconds later Sutherland forward Gabe Fiorella fought hard into the right corner and crossed to Lee. Lee made an amazing shot point blank and goalkeeper Andrew Hoyt recorded a fingertip save at the crossbar.
With 16 minutes remaining, Lil’ Irish leading scorer Landberg takes an Aquinas goal kick deep into the Knights defense and scored from 25 yards out crossing the goal into the left corner.
The Lil’ Irish earned a 2-1 victory.

Five minutes in, Brighton defender Casey Kopp shoots hard directly at Drinkwater low. Drinkwater deflected but the ball rolled near goal and attacker David Medina poked it in for the 1-0 Barons lead.
The Knights struggled to muster some offense until 15 minutes in but Sutherland midfielder Max Black controlled a long cross to goal and kicked a blistering shot that narrowly missed, bouncing off the left post.
That seemed to charge up the Knights as shortly after, Brad Jennette throws in near the right corner flag and Sutherland midfielder Evan Boyd crushes a shot to goal that Barons goalkeeper Yusuf Ozen struggled to handle as Brighton took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The game was a defensive battle for the first 10 minutes and then Medina scored as he split two defenders to give the Barons a 2-0 lead. The Knights came right back with Boyd crossing to goal and forward Davis Frame just missed the left post.
With 13 minutes remaining and Medina rockets a low cross from the far right through the goal and Sutherland goalkeeper Cobi Beach reaches out to snag the ball and saves a goal. One minute later, Knights Rolf Witt kicks to goal from 10 out right side.
Sutherland’s Zach Nesser headed the ball in to break the ice for the Knights. Brighton kept Sutherland out of the goal and earned the 2-1 win.
