The Brighton Barons boys’ soccer team thumped Canandaigua 4-0 on the road Friday night to up their record to 7-2 overall (4-2 league) in advance of Tuesday night’s highly anticipated matchup with Pittsford Mendon.

Seniors Alban Zohn and Jonah Boucher each scored a pair of goals to highlight a strong team performance that featured an emphasis on passing and ball movement.

Boucher opened the scoring in the 18th minute after a buildup of passes helped spread the field. Central midfielder Manny Gil moved the ball outside on the left flank to defender Stephen Steckler who drove a cross to Zohn at the top of the box.

Zohn quickly laid it back to Boucher who took one touch to his left before firing into the right side of the net for his first varsity goal.

The Barons doubled their lead just three minute later.

Junior David Medina powered down the right side and along the end line toward goal. With the defense collapsing on him he slotted a diagonal pass in front of goal where Zohn one-timed it into the back of the net.

Any doubt regarding the outcome was erased in the 48th minute. Steckler played a long ball up the left sideline over the top of the midfield that came down at Medina’s feet.

With the defense rapidly retreating Medina stopped his forward thrust and turned to spot Zohn moving up the center of the pitch in space. After receiving the diagonal pass from Medina, Zohn pushed forward to his right and struck through the ball firing a rocket shot from more than 30 yards out that screamed past the keeper for a goal worthy of applause.

Boucher rounded out the scoring in the 74th minute with another shot from 30 yards out. Senior Dan Stevenson assisted on the goal which was again taken by Boucher with his non-dominant left foot.

Yusef Ozen made two saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Barons. The defense was led by senior captain Jackson Shaw, sophomore Ben Orr and juniors Yunis Tekin and Steckler.

Seniors Ben Baskin, Tyler Becker and junior Christian Mann helped see out the game to complete the Barons third clean sheet of the year.

After facing Mendon on Tuesday the Barons are back on the home turf Thursday night against West Irondequoit. Saturday night brings a short trip west down Elmwood Avenue to face cross-town rival McQuaid at 7 p.m.
