Baseball For All (BFA) has chosen 12-year-old Eliza DeMers of Brighton as a member of the Sparks, an all-girl 12U baseball team that will compete against 103 boys’ teams from across the country.
The games will take place at Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, N.Y., July 20-27.
In 2003, the Sparks became the first all-girls baseball team to compete at Dreams Park, and this year marks their 10th season. The team has drawn top players from the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Australia, Hong Kong and Indonesia.
DeMers currently plays baseball for the Churchville Babe Ruth team coached by Joe Reina, head baseball coach at the University of Rochester. She also plays for the North Coast Baseball League’s Diamond Dawgs, who will compete in Cooperstown Dreams Park July 27-August 3.
DeMers just completed the modified (grades 7/8) baseball season with the Harley-Allendale Columbia team where she received the Golden Spikes Award and was cited by her coach as “the most talked about player in the Wayne-Finger Lakes League.”
She is a straight-A student at the Harley School where is also a stand-out in tennis and basketball, competes on the MATHCOUNTS team and plays the flute.
