The Brighton boys’ soccer team finished a busy three games in five days period with victories over Wayne and Penfield after suffering a setback against Pittsford Sutherland. The results put the Barons record at 6-2 overall and 3-2 in league games.

Josh Hunt’s hat trick and David Medina’s trio of assists helped make for a happy bus ride home after a feisty 5-1 triumph over the Wayne Eagles Monday night. The offensive explosion was what the Barons’ and their fans had been waiting for having dominated possession throughout most of the season, but failing to tally more than two scores in any of their previous games.

The Barons earned a 2-0 halftime lead on a pair of set plays that began with junior Addison McGinnis sending crosses deep through the box toward the far post.  In the 17th minute Medina touched the cross to Hunt for the finish.

Twenty minutes later the cross cleared past a crowd in the middle and Hunt collected it to calmly bury his second goal from nearly the same spot as the first.

The second half began with Wayne getting back in the game on a penalty kick less than a minute after the restart, but the two goal cushion would be stored in the 48th minute by Alban Zohn. The strapping senior took a pass from Medina thirty yards in front of the net and powered diagonally to his right.

Shrugging off a physical challenge he drove his foot through the ball to crush a low shot perfectly placed inside the near post.

Zohn and Hunt teamed up less than ten minutes later to artistically stamp the game a blowout. The two forwards were outnumbered on a counterattack, but Zohn spotted Hunt’s run ahead of him to his left.

He threaded a perfectly timed diagonal ball to hit Hunt in stride. Hunt’s hat trick was complete when he pushed the ball past the keeper and into the side netting.

Senior midfielder Sam Carletta completed the scoring after Medina drove with the ball deep the right side of the box before driving it into the goal mouth. The cross deflected in front of the goal and Carletta beat the keeper to it to drive it home and punctuate the victory.

The Barons hosted Penfield on Saturday to culminate a the homecoming sports calendar in Brighton.  Hunt scored both goals to earn a 2-1 victory in double overtime.

The Barons hosted Penfield on Saturday to culminate a the homecoming sports calendar in Brighton.  Hunt scored both goals to earn a 2-1 victory in double overtime.

The initial score came midway through the first half after a long free kick toward goal. The Penfield keeper came off his line to battle for the ball which bounced out to Hunt on the right flank.

With a delicate touch he floated the ball over the mass of defenders clogging the box while keeping it low enough to sail into the far side of the net before the retreating goalie could attempt to do anything about it.

The lead held until the 58th minute when the Patriots equalized on along free kick of their own. The Barons nearly regained the lead late in regulation when Colin Johnson’s 75th minute shot smacked squarely against the crossbar.

The winner nearly came again in the 80th minute when Zohn got in behind the defense from the right side, but he was denied by the keeper.

Both sides battled deep into the second of two ten minute sudden death overtime periods and a disappointing tie loomed. As the clock moved into the 100th and final minute Zohn drove a cross in front of goal.

The keeper got to the ball first, however, with red and white shirts racing in his initial touch left the ball loose behind him. Hunt fought through the crowd and somehow managed to get enough of a foot on the ball to help it over the line for the stunning winner.

Yusef Ozen made seven saves to earn the win.  His finest effort came early in the game when he dove low to his left to stop a free kick that looked as though it would give Penfield an early lead.

Last Thursday the Barons hosted Pittsford Sutherland. The Knights survived a barrage of first half corner kicks (12 on the game) to make it to the intermission scoreless before the frustrated Barons allowed two goals midway through the second half.

The deficit was cut in half with ten minutes remaining when the ball ping ponged from wide left to wide right where McGinnis sent  it straight back into the middle. Zohn was directly in front of the goal when he one-timed it in.

The two teams will meet again in Pittsford for the regular season finale Oct. 18, but the Barons first chance at payback comes Tuesday when Pittsford Mendon visits Brighton at 7:45 p.m.
