The Pittsford Mendon varsity girls soccer team took on two tough opponents at home this past week, posting two more victories and two more shut-outs.
The Lady Vikings are ranked seventh in New York State. Their current record of 9-2-3 consists of 29 goals for and only six goals against. They have recorded nine shutouts and are in first place both in Class A and Division II.
In the first game, Mendon took on their rivals, the Aquinas Little Irish. Mendon lost to the Little Irish in the last four match-ups. This game would be different and the Lady Vikings would start to turn the tables as early as minute two in the game when Mendon was awarded a corner kick.
Senior midfielder Shannon Walsh sent the ball to the far post where senior defender Christina Fluman charged on the ball and was able to deflect the ball into the goal with her body.
Mendon’s second goal came early as well, in minute six of the game. It was a replay of the shot that earned Mendon the corner kick, just minutes earlier.
Junior Haley Higgins, coming up the center, sent a perfect pass over to junior Maddie Ferris who made a beautiful shot into the goal for Mendon. The final goal of the game came when junior Laura Herman passed the ball out to senior forward Morganne Madonia who took the ball into the box and made a well-placed shot past the Aquinas goalkeeper for the third goal.
Mendon continued to control the game in the second half, allowing Aquinas very few opportunities at the net. Senior goalkeeper Miranda Stowe ended with two saves and the final score was 3-0.
Later in the week, Class AA Webster Schroeder Warriors traveled to Mendon for a match. The Warriors have had a good season this year and the Lady Vikings were ready for another tough game.
Mendon again was able to score early to gain control of the game. Eight minutes in, Ferris sent a nice pass to the top of Schroeder’s box where Herman was waiting.
Herman collected the ball and made a fabulous shot that got over the Warriors goalie, to put Mendon in the lead 1-0. This would be the only goal in the first half.
In the second half, 11 minutes in, Ferris again was able to get the ball in position for sophomore Shannon Miller to pick it up in the box and make a spectacular shot into the far side netting of the goal. This put Mendon in the lead 2-0.
Schroeder had a few good scoring opportunities, but Mendon was able to hold them off and come up with a big win.
Goalkeeper Madeline Stowe had some exciting and well-played saves, finishing the game with nine. Stowe currently has a total of 60 saves with only six against, giving her a save percentage of 90.9. She has one of the top save percentages in Class A.
Mendon returns to action on Friday for their final game of the regular season, when they travel to Honeoye Falls-Lima to take on the Cougars at 7 p.m.
