The Spirit Fest 2012 Cheerleading Competition was held last Sunday at the Dome in Henrietta. It was the first time many cheerleading teams have been judged on the new scoring rules, which are effective for this year.
The new rules were designed to achieve fairness and consistency when judging stunts, tumbling, jumps, and difficulty. Understanding and implementing the new rules can be challenging, but Pittsford Varsity coaches Linda Gabbert and Rachael Weise’s efforts have paid off, and their competition season is off to a great start.
The Varsity team won first place in their division. In addition, they were the Grand Champions with the highest score of the day. Exciting new elements have been added to their routine as part of the new rules changes.
Inverted stunts bring a new level of excitement and difficulty as flyers can now flip in the air. Pittsford executes inverted elements in both their individual and connection stunts.
Spirit Fest also had a Senior Individual competition where senior cheerleaders could perform their own routine of jumps, tumbling, cheer and dance. Pittsford Mendon senior Anna Grace Kelly placed fifth in the Senior Individuals and Pittsford Sutherland senior Heather Stone placed sixth.
Pittsford junior varsity team also had an exciting day at Spirit Fest performing their new routine for the first time. The JV team also placed first in their division. The JV team is coached by Abby Ricci and Colby Smith.
