David Medina scored two goals and Brighton held off a Pittsford Sutherland rally to earn a 2-1 victory in a Monroe County Division II boys soccer game Thursday at Sutherland.
Medina, who leads the Barons (12-3-1 overall, 7-3 Division II) with 11 goals, gave the Barons some early momentum scoring 5:01 into the first half. The junior forward got into the box and knocked a loose ball by diving Pittsford Sutherland (8-6-2, 7-3-1) goalie Lee Drinkwater.
Senior defender Casey Kopp was credited with the only assist on the opening goal.
Medina struck again 8:50 into the second half when he got into the box and chipped a shot over Cobi Beach, who replaced Drinkwater to start the second half. Senior midfielder Colin Johnson was credited with the only assist on the goal.
The Knights regained the momentum when junior midfielder Zach Nesser headed in an indirect kick by Rolf Witt to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 12:05 remaining in the second half. Nesser’s goal was the second of the season.
The Barons responded though, as they controlled the possession over the final 12 minutes. Beach kept Sutherland within one goal stopping two outstanding chances by Brighton’s Josh Hunt.
Each team will compete in the Section 5 Class A tournament, which kicks off next week. The Barons, the defending Class A champion, will be the second seed, while the Knights are expected to be seeded fifth.
Pittsford Mendon (16-0), who won the Class A title in 2009 and ‘10, earned the top seed.
