The Brighton Girls’ Cross Country team returned on Tuesday to Parma Town Park a week after the cancelation of their last competition. That competition was halted due to a hornet attack on three athletes in an earlier race.
This time around the girls’ race went off first and the Lady Barons discovered how tough Monroe County competition can be. While they beat host school Batavia 25-36, they were shut out by perennial powers Pittsford Mendon and Hilton.
Talia Pinker, led the Brighton pack, finishing in 22:04. She was followed closely by Alexa Campbell at 22:15, Ann Wilkinson at 22:16, Alexa Bower at 22:36 and Kate Costanza at 22: 37.
Madi Carter (22:42) and Mandy Smith (22:47) finished as Brighton’s sixth and seventh runners. Also under 23 minutes was Molly Spero who finished just a few steps behind Smith at 22:49. Ali Roman (23: 31) and Jolie Gittleman (23:43) completed the Varsity scoring for the Lady Barons.
Newcomer Adrienne Zand led the Girls’ junior varsity team. Finishing close behind was Carolyn Raca, Priscilla Thomas, Maude Hall-Skillern and Sophia Stone, all of whom finished within 48 seconds of one another. All five girls posted times faster than 25 minutes for the 5000-meter course.
Coach Steve Pulos noted that the girls looked a bit tired from their efforts at six races in the last three weeks.
“We expect to do better at our next league meet since we’ll have the Columbus Day weekend to rest,” Pulos said.
The Lady Barons now have a record of 5-7.
