The strength of the Pittsford Panthers this season has been their run game, and it didn’t take long for the Webster Schroeder defenders to learn that on Saturday.
The Warriors had kept it close all season despite their 1-4 mark heading into the game, but that changed Saturday afternoon as the Panthers took a 35-0 lead into the half and won 38-6 to improve to 5-1 on the season.
The Panthers started out the game with a 9-play, 57-yard drive, ending with a touchdown pass from Henry Hoffend to Matt Sullivan. Pittsford ran the ball all but two plays on the drive, handing the ball off to senior running back Glynn Molinich, who carried 20 times for 167 yards on the day.
After a Panthers fumble by Mac Atkins gave Schroeder great field position at their own 44, Atkins came back three plays later with an interception that led to the first of two Glynn Molinich touchdowns. His second touchdown came less than four minutes later, giving the Panthers a commanding 21-0 lead with 8:26 left in the second quarter.
A key injury occurred on Schroeder’s first drive to their starting quarterback Jake Guy, forcing backup Joe Morency into action. This injury clearly hurt the Warriors ability to move the ball on the Panthers defense, as Schroeder couldn’t manage to get a first down all first half.
“For him to go down with an injury that put them in a huge bind,” said Keith Molinich, Pittsford head coach, about Guy. “They aren’t the same team without Jake Guy.”
The game got out of hand late in the first half, where in a span of 14 seconds Pittsford scored two touchdowns to take a 35-0 lead with 3:52 left in the half. First, running back Danny Page scored his lone touchdown of the day, a 16 yard scamper.
On the ensuing kickoff, a Schroeder fumble was recovered by Andrew Fogal to give the Panthers the ball on the 15 yard line. The first play of the drive resulted in a touchdown pass from Henry Hoffend to Austin Degrazia.
In the second half, the Pittsford starters got some rest with just one game left until sectionals.
It was a total team effort for the Panthers, who are now riding a 4-game winning streak. Danny Page added 69 yards running on 10 carries.
Tight end Matt Sullivan finished with three catches for 28 yards a score. Defensively Andrew Fogal recorded four tackles along with his fumble recovery. Jake Volker also had two sacks on the day.
Pittsford will play their last game of the regular season Saturday at St. John Fisher College against Marshall (1-5, 1-4). Webster Schroeder (1-5, 1-5) closes its season at home Friday night against Penfield (1-5, 0-5).
“If they can’t keep their heads focused with sectionals coming up they should go do something else,” Molinich said. “Their mindset is right, their ready to go”
