The Brighton Barons travelled to Honeoye Falls-Lima to take on the Cougars last Saturday. With the Baron’s record setting running back out due to injury the Barons faced a challenging afternoon of football on a windy fall afternoon.
In the first quarter neither team made much progress offensively. Despite a fumble recovery and an interception by the Barons, the Brighton offense was unable to get the ball into the end zone. As the quarter wound down the Cougars scored to bring the game to 7-0.
In the second quarter Brighton again recovered a fumble but was unable to score on their possession and the Cougars managed a touchdown on their next series bringing the score to 14-0. Another fumble by the Cougars brought the ball back to Brighton and quarterback Ben Pearsall advanced the team down the field.
Relying on their passing game, the Barons were able to move the chains with receptions by Jack Thomas. Next, Dynell Heath started with a short run.
Then Pearsall connected with John Bender for a short gain. Finally, Pearsall lofted a pass to Thomas who raced into the end zone for the Baron’s touchdown. Adam Watson split the uprights and added the extra point and the Barons were on the board 14-7.
In the third quarter both teams came up empty handed on their offensive possessions and were scoreless. In the fourth quarter the Cougars scored to bring the game to 20-7, and were later able to add a field goal to bring the game to 23-7.
“Our defense played another great game, forcing 5 HF-L turnovers,” said Stephen Lian, Brighton head coach.
“Unfortunately, our offense could only convert one of those into points. We really need to focus on developing better offensive consistency as we look to close out the regular season against our most challenging opponent yet.”
On the ground Dynell Heath had 33 carries for 101 yards. Jack Thomas hauled in five catches for 81 yards and one touchdown.
Omari Henderson had six tackles for the Barons and Adam Spencer had five. Zach Holtzman had one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one interception, while Justin Gudell had five tackles and one forced fumble.
The Barons return to action Friday as they host Victor at 7:45p.m. Friday.
