Hockey: Pittsford wins two in capital region

The Pittsford varsity ice hockey team swept a pair of games against two perennial New York State powers in the capital regional last weekend. The Panthers defeated Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs on back to back days to raise their overall record to 13-1.

On Friday Pittsford traveled to Clifton Park to play Shenendehowa.

The Panthers took an early penalty, but Andrew Scuncio scored a shorthanded goal at 2:17 to give Pittsford a 1-0 lead. Taylor Howard and Cameron Perna assisted.

The Panthers made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Max Kaufman at 10:59 of the second. Shenendehowa scored late in the second to cut the lead to 2-1.

Pittsford closed out the scoring at 6:52 of the third on a power play goal by Corey Parke. Scuncio and Andrew Rodenhouse earned assists and 3-1 was the final score. 

Albie DiPasquale made 27 saves to earn the victory. 

One day later the Panthers played a thrilling game at Saratoga Springs. Pittsford fell behind 1-0 only 37 seconds after the opening faceoff but quickly tied the game. Captain Taylor Howard tallied with assists from Marc Weyl and Corey Parke at 2:57 of the first.

However, after scoring in the first minute of the period Saratoga scored again in the final minute to make it 2-1 after one.

Pittsford came back to tie it on a goal by Ryan Hager at 2:26 of the second. Brad Sherman and Andrew Rodenhouse assisted. Saratoga Springs regained the lead late in the second to make it 3-2 heading to the final period.

The Panthers tied it at 7:18 of the third on a power play goal by Max Kaufman. Parke picked up the lone assist and it was 3-3.

Less than two minutes later Pittsford scored the game winner. Hager passed to Andrew Scuncio who took it up ice and after a neat move on the defenseman scored on a wrist shot. The Panthers were headed home with their second victory in the Albany area 4-3.
Luke Loveys made 16 saves in goal.

At 13-1 Pittsford was ranked second in the New York State rankings by ushsho.com. The Panthers were ranked third in New York in the most recent State Sportswriters poll.

Kaufman and Marc Weyl are tied for the team lead in goals with 12 each. Loveys is 10-1 with six shutouts and a 0.84 goals against average.
