Natalie Meyer made history this winter when she became the first girl to play on the Pittsford varsity ice hockey team. While she is pleased with the accomplishment, Meyer is no different than any other Panther in simply making the team was not enough.

Her biggest goal is to win a sectional title, the program’s third in the last four seasons.

Meyer, a backup goalie, has played in two games this season recording a shutout in the team’s 10-0 win over the Greece Lightning on Jan. 29. In two games against the Lightning, she allowed only two goals and finished with a save percentage of .923.

“I think we got off to a good start, and I started going with the flow and things went well,” said Meyer, a senior at Pittsford Mendon, about the shutout. “The first game, I was more nervous, this one went a lot better.”

Meyer grew up in hockey as she started to play the game at eight-years-old. She spent two years on the Panthers junior varsity team and still plays club with the Rochester Edge.

Meyer has fit in well with her teammates, crediting the work she did with the them over the summer.
Meyer’s father and uncle grew up in Pittsford and played scholastically when Mendon and Sutherland had their own hockey teams. Her uncle Tim was an all-county goalie for the Vikings.

“I think she fits right in,” said Steve Thering, Pittsford head coach. “Growing up she has played hockey previously. The guys have accepted her in and she has really enjoyed it. She is quck, she works hard, and she is committed to the program and I think those are all important things to look at.”

Meyer is also a standout on the Mendon field hockey and track and field teams.

She was also a goalie in field hockey, making the move to the sport after playing soccer for two years. Meyer played an integral role in the team’s success last fall when they didn’t lose a game in the regular season.

Meyer’s top sport is track and field where she won the Section 5 Class A high jump title last spring. She has made official visits to Lehigh and St. Joe’s for track.

“I have been doing it for a while, I think it would be weird to have a break,” Meyer said about playing three sports. “I like it and it keeps me busy. It’s a lot of work but I enjoy it.”
