  • High school students from around the county received the opportunity to play in a brass band with undergraduate students from the University of Rochester Saturday, Feb. 13.
It was part of the university’s first Day of Brass. Josef Hanson, manager of music performance programs in the university’s music department, came up with the community-outreach idea.
“We thought based on the repertoire we play, it would make sense to bring in high schoolers who might be entering an ensemble situation in college,” Hanson said.
Brighton High School junior Jacob Schermerhorn was one of the high school students at the event.
“It’s interesting to see what you can go on to do with your instrument if it’s not going to be your major,” the French horn player said.
The event included rehearsal leading up to what Hanson called a “mega brass ensemble.” Schermerhorn said playing in the ensemble was his favorite part.
Additionally, students learned breathing techniques from Jim Thompson from the Eastman School of Music, and about Civil War-era brass instruments from Eastman graduate Jeff Stockham.
Hanson is hoping to make the Day of Brass an annual event.
