Rochester —
The Grammy-winning Ying Quartet joins Rochester City Ballet in Jamey Leverett's production of “The Blood Countess” in February.
Tickets are now on sale for the ballet choreographed and created by Leverett, RCB's artistic director.
Part thriller, part dark romance, “The Blood Countess” features the music of Dmitri Shostakovich performed by the Grammy-Award winning Ying Quartet and pianist Elinor Freer. Original sets designed by Leverett and Gordon J. Estey and costumes designed by Yuanting Zhao are also featured in the production.
The story comes from a legend about a 16th-century Hungarian countess who killed more than 600 virginal women and bathed in their blood in her search for eternal youth. The story includes a cameo from young Dracula.
"We're thrilled to be collaborating with the Rochester City Ballet on 'The Blood Countess',” said David Ying in a release. “We are looking forward to be playing such a powerful score in support of an equally compelling production."
Veteran RCB company members Tara Lally and Brandon Alexander will reprise their roles as the Blood Countess and Dracula. Megan Kamler portrays Dracula's fiancée. Kelsey Schneider, Brette Benedict and Kaitlin Fitzgerald portray witches, and Jessica Tretter performs as Chosen Virgin.
Performances are at the Nazareth College Arts Center, 4245 East Ave., from Feb. 3 to Feb. 5, with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets cost $50 to $65 and are available at the Nazareth Arts Center box office, 585-389-2170, or online at www.artscenter.naz.edu. Because of adult content, the show is recommended for ages 13 years and older, with parental discretion advised.
