Jasen and Kyle Borshoff spent the last four summers with their teammates on the American University Wrestling team giving clinics around the Washington, D.C. area.
This winter they got a call from Jason Bovenzi, their old head coach from their time with Pittsford. Bovenzi offered the brothers the opportunity to teach at Apex Wrestling Camp with some of Section 5’s best wrestlers.
After the conversation with Bovenzi the brothers decided to add a stop on their summer tour.
The Borshoffs are two of the five former Section 5 standouts to teach at the Section 5’s Finest Camp, part of the Apex Summer Camp, being held at Calkins Road Middle School. The Section 5’s Finest Camp ran until Friday.
“I love being able to give back to the sport, and help out my former coach as much as I can,” Kyle said. “I respect (Bovenzi) as much as anyone else in the wrestling world. I was more than happy to come out and teach the kids and help them succeed.”
The Borshoffs taught 50 high school aged wrestlers some of the techniques they used at American. The camp featured wrestlers from all over Section 5 including Pittsford, Brighton and Webster.
“I grew up wrestling in Pittsford, and I wanted to come back here and help my old coach,” Jasen said. “I’d like to get in here and take a look at Section 5 guys and see who I should look at in the future.”
Since they graduated from high school they have given camps to athletes every summer. And who were there biggest coaching role models? American head coach Mark Cody and Bovenzi.
Jasen is using this camp to get ready for his next gig: assistant coach at Binghamton University.
“We’ve been doing this every summer since we got to American, but it was nice to get up here and be on our own,” Jasen said. “We were looking forward to this camp. We couldn’t wait to teach the techniques that can get them to the next level.”
Jasen ascended to number one in Division I at 125 pounds during his time with the Eagles. He was also an academic All-American.
Kyle earned the top ranking in Division I at 149 during his time with American and was an NCAA All-American. This past season he finished eighth at nationals.
“Going to American was the best choice I’ve ever made,” Kyle said. “It was like we were a part of a family. I’m so happy I chose to go there.”
Bovenzi was also able to lure former Section 5 standouts Trevor Chinn (Canandaigua Academy), Gregor Gillespie (Webster Schroeder) and Josh Patterson (Wayne). All three wrestled at Division I programs.
Week two of the Apex Wrestling Camp, which kicks off Monday, will focus on the Granby System. The technical wrestling system will be taught by legendary Spencerport head coach Bill Jacatout.
“It’s nice to bring in talent to reinforce what we are doing or give us tips on some new techniques that people are having success with,” Bovenzi said. “It keeps me fresh, and it helps reinforce some of the skills we teach.”
